Chromecast vs Roku – Battle of Media Streamers

There is no need for you to use bulk boxes to stream media on your TV.

With the use of HDMI sticks, you can now enjoy watching your favorite movies on Netflix. Netflix and other internet-based streaming services are a very popular way to watch TV these days. Media streaming sticks are available to turn your TV into a Smart TV. Google Chromecast and Roku Streaming Stick are two of the most inexpensive HDMI sticks that you can use for media streaming purposes.

Portable Devices

Setting up the two devices is easy; just plug them into your TV, connect to a network and you’re good to go. Both devices are portable, just the size of a USB device so it’s easy to travel with either of the sticks. Both the Chromecast and the Roku Streaming Stick are perfect for travel purposes when you’re stuck in your hotel room and you find yourself wishing for your favorite movie.

Chromecast

Chromecast is not a standalone media device, but it acts as an accessory for smartphones and tablets. It does not have a remote and it can’t be controlled on screen. It can be controlled using your PC, smartphone, or tablet. You will also have to download the Chromecast app from either Apple’s App Store or Google’s Play Store. The Chromecast has ample amount of apps on its sleeve, including Netflix, YouTube, HBO Go, Hulu Plus, Vevo, Crackle, among others. Video quality is also stellar from most sources, especially Netflix HD. On your mobile device, Chromecast has a “Cast” button, which will appear if a compatible app is available. By tapping on the “Cast” button, whatever media you’re watching will be streamed to a Chromecast.

Roku Streaming Stick

The first difference that the Roku Streaming Stick has with the Chromecast is that the Roku Streaming Stick comes with a remote. You may navigate through different menus to load media content services such as Netflix, HBO Go, and Hulu Plus. Roku collects TV shows and movies from different online services and you may search for a movie or TV show of your choice in the Roku Search feature. It will then show the content providers where you can watch it. Like with Chromecast, you can also download the Roku App for free. With this app, you can stream media straight from your smartphone or tablet. There’s also a feature that allows you to stream other media such as photos and music that are stored on your smartphone or tablet.

Final Verdict

The Roku Streaming Stick provides more content and gives you direct access to the content with the use of the remote, library of channels, and on-screen menus. The Chromecast, on the other hand, has lesser channels compared to Roku, although it costs less than the Roku Streaming Stick. If you are fine streaming content from your mobile device, then you can go for the Chromecast. If you don’t, Roku Streaming Stick is the better choice as it comes with remote and more content choices.
