Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 vs Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 – Price and Specs Comparison

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 is part of the second generation Galaxy Tab that was launched as a competitor to the Apple iPad.

This device was announced by Samsung at a time when it was taking severe criticism from Apple for copying its design, but the tablet is unique in more ways than one. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 is the third generation variant, which improves on a number of aspects.

Hard Work in Design Pays Off

One area where the tablet gets a huge bump is the styling. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 was one of the best looking tablets when it was originally launched, but by the end of its life-cycle, it was no longer considered as one. This aspect needed to be corrected by its replacement – the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0. Apart from making a thinner bezel and straightening out the edges, Samsung has worked extremely hard on trying to reduce the device thickness.

The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 came with a thickness of 10.5 mm when it was launched two years ago. By the time the third generation was released, Samsung had managed to reduce the thickness to around 9.9 mm in the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0. It had also brought down the weight slightly from 345 g to 306 g.

Screen Upgrades

One area where it is difficult to separate the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 from the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 is the screen. As their name suggests, both devices come with a 7 inch display, which makes them be classified as compact tablets. They cannot be compared with their 10.1 inch cousins in terms of multimedia capabilities, but using this screen size gives the device a lot of advantage in terms of portability.

However, the small screen has also allowed Samsung to use a resolution of 600 x 1024 pixels and still provide a pixel density of 170 PPI in both devices.

No Changes to the Battery

Despite the support for 3G services, the 4000 mAh battery in the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 has been rated as one of the best. This, coupled with the 7 inch display meant that the device was able to run for up to 40 hours in the 2G mode. As a result, Samsung has not made any changes to the battery capacity. The Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 also comes with the same 4000 mAh unit, which is good enough to power the device for a continuous 100 hour music playback.

Color Options

Unlike the Apple iPad that came with only a few colors, the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 was offered with three different color options – red, white, and black. This feature, however, was removed with the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0, which came only in the white version.

After almost two years since its launch, the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 should retail at around $ 150 for the Wi-Fi only 16 GB version in the limited stock that would be available. The much more recent Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 retails at $ 180 for a similar version.
