Galaxy S3 vs Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S5 – Comparison of Price, Specs and Best Features

Display and Screen

When comparing the specs of the recently released S5 with the S4 and the S3, the display of the S5 is the biggest with 5.1 inches and the S4 is next at 5.1 inches, both with FHD Super AMOLED, whereas the S3 has a smaller display screen of 4.8 inches in HD Super AMOLED.

Both the S5 and the S4 have a high resolution of 1920 x 1080 p, with the S3 at a lower resolution of 1280 x 720 p. The pixel density for the S5 and S4 works out to be 441 ppi with the S3 at a lower 306 ppi.

The S5 is the heaviest at 145 kg with the S3 at 133g and the lightest being the S4 at 130 g. The dimensions of the S5 are 142.0 x 72.5 x 8.1 mm; the S4 is 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm; and the S3 is 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm showing the S5 to be the largest in size. However, the design of all the three handsets is almost similar, with the increase in size being the only distinguishing element.

Hardware Comparison

The S5 is run on the superior 2.5 GHz Snapdragon 801, which is a quad core, whereas the S4 has a 1.9 GHz Snapdragon 600 processor and the S3 a lower 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4, which is dual core. However, the RAM specs of all the three devices are the same t 2 GB. Both the S5 and the S3 come in variants of 16 GB and 32 GB, whereas the S4 is available in three variants of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, all of them being expandable to a maximum of 64 GB with the use of the Micro SD slot. The processor of the S5 is a step away from the 600 to 801 and the Graphics processor in the S5 is at 330 compared to the 320 of the S4, enabling better performance from the S5, compared to the S4 and S3. The battery of the S5 is the best with greater capacity.

Camera

The S5 has the maximum camera resolution of 16 MP, followed by the S4 at 13 MP and the S3 at 8 MP, in case of the primary or rear camera. As for the front camera, the S5 has a resolution of 2.1 MP and the S4 a 2 MP one, with the S3 trailing behind at 1.9 MP. Battery capacity of the S5 is also higher for the S5 at 2800 mAh, with the S4 at 2600 mAh and the S3 at 21 mAh, all of which are removable. The sudden jump of the camera resolution from 13 MP to 16 MP makes a great improvement in the S5. The senor in the camera of the S5 is also a little bigger, and this is a great help during low light conditions. The front camera of the S5 has also received a boost, albeit a very small one from 2.0 to 2.1 MP.

Networking Features

All the three devices have support for LTE, Wi-Fi, GSM and CDMA support. An additional feature found in the S4 and the S5 is the IR Blaster, which is absent in the S3. The S5 also has some other interesting features, such as a fingerprint Sensor and a Heart rate monitor. It is both dust and water-resistant as well. The fingerprint scanner in the S5 is an important upgrade, which can be accessed using the home button in the front. The S5 has the same USB 3.0 for charging and for data transfer. The heart rate monitor for the finger is found at the back near LED Flash. However, the S3 is ready for its two year upgrades, so many of the features may soon be available on the S3 as well.

As for the price, the 16GB version of the S3 can be bought at around $199.99, with the S4 at around $579 for the 16 GB model and the S5 at $550 to $650, off contract.
