Sony Xperia Z1 vs Sony Xperia Z1 Compact – Specs and Price Comparison

While Sony Xperia Z1 was released in September 2013, Xperia Z1 Compact was launched in January 2014.

The Compact version was launched as an improvement on the original version of the phone. Both these smartphones are spectacular in the own right, but if you think that the only difference between the two of is their dimensions, you would be wrong. Here’s how they compare.

Price

Due to its higher specs, Sony Xperia Z1 Compact has a higher price tag. In Australia, it is priced at AU $669.95 as compared to AU $629.95 for its predecessor. In the USA, the price for Xperia Z1 is $549.99 and the price of Xperia Z1 Compact is $570 if you buy the unlocked versions without any calling plans.

Design

Both these phones are stunning, but the most dramatic difference between the two is the size. Sony Xperia Z1 has a lightweight and convenient 144.4 x 73.9 x 8.5mm frame, but the Compact version is much more convenient for handling and the frame measures 127 x 64.9 x 9.5mm. With both these phones, you can see the trademark Sony design elements – the large black glass front, with colored bands on the side and matching colored glass back. Both the phones are sleek and elegant, and give great one-handed use. The phones are available in black, white and lilac colors.

Hardware

Both Z1 and Z1 Compact have been given a great 20.7 MP Exmor Sensor, which gives them exceptional picture taking abilities even when the light is very low. The phones also come with a great camera app that makes picture taking a very intuitive and interesting experience. Both come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.2 GHz quad-core processor, which is much faster than the Xperia Z’s Qualcomm MDM9215M 1.5 GHz quad-core processor. Both have only one SIM slot and support only a micro SIM and they both have 16 GB internal storage.

Display

Both these phones have capacitative touchscreens, but owing to its smaller size, the compact version has smaller display. Sony Xperia Z1 has 5 inches display while the Sony Xperia Z1Compact has 4.3 inches display. With a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels, Sony Xperia Z1 gives a better resolution as compared to its compact version which has a resolution of 720×1280 pixels. Sadly, the Z1 Compact does not support full HD picture. Both the phones support 16M colors and have the beautiful Sony screen quality. There are display settings to save battery and make other adjustments.

Handling and Quality

Though most of the features in the two phones are the same, Z1 Compact certainly has a better quality body and much easier handling than its predecessor. Being a newer phone, the Z1 Compact makes use of better technology and though it does not support full HD picture quality, viewing is much easier and more pleasant on it. This is because even when the phone is at an angle, you get better picture than the larger Z1. They have the same core processor, storage and camera. The two phones have near identical specifications and yet, the Z1 Compact comes out as a better phone in both quality and handling. So if you are planning to buy a Sony phone and are not sure which one to pick, be sure to give a good thought to Z1 Compact which is a great looking phone at a very good price.
