Form Factor
The difference in physical dimensions of both phones is not much. The S4 Mini measures 4.9 (H) x 2.41 (W) x 0.35 (D) inches and weighs not more than 107 grams, whereas the Z1 Compact is slightly bigger and measures 5.0 (H) x 2.56 (W) x 0.37 (D) inches and weighs not more than 137 grams. Sony has made Z1 Compact waterproof and dustproof. The S4 Mini does not have such features.
Display
Display size and quality are two major important factors that customers focus on while buying a phone. The words compact and mini in the name of the phones clearly signify they have an average sized displays. Despite differences in external dimensions, both phones have similar size displays- 4.3 inches. The quality and technology of the displays are however different. The display in S4 Mini is a Super AMOLED screen while the display in Z1 Compact is an IPS LCD screen. The pixel density and resolution of Z1 Compact screen is higher at 342 ppi and 720 by 1280 pixels, while the pixel density and resolution of the S4 Mini touch screen is 256 ppi and 540 by 960 pixels respectively. S4 Mini’s display is protected by Gorilla glass from Corning while a stain-resistant and shatterproof glass protects the Z1 Compact’s display. The capacitive screen in Z1 Compact supports simultaneous use of 10 fingers for input.
Processor and Platform
The internals specs of both devices are quite similar. Both phones feature a Snapdragon 800 chip from Qualcomm. The main processor and GPU fitted on the Snapdragon chipset are different. The S4 Mini has a 1.7 GHz dual-core Krait microprocessor and an Adreno 305 GPU while the Z1 Compact has a 2.2 GHz quad-core Krait processor and an Adreno 330 GPU. The Adreno 330 GPU is quite better in handling 3D graphics rendering than Adreno 305.
Memory and Internal Storage Space
The S4 Mini has 1.5 GB RAM and 8GB internal storage space. You can extend the storage space up to 64 GB by adding a microSD card of that capacity. The Z1 Compact has around 2 GB RAM and twice the internal storage space – 16GB. Sony has also provided an option to extend storage space up to 64 GB through microSD card.
Battery
S4 Mini is equipped with a battery rated at 1500 mAh that can provide talk time of 12 hours on 3G networks while the Z1 Compact has a battery rated at 2300 mAh that can provide talk time of 18 hours on 3G networks.
Price
The S4 Mini is priced at $286.70 while the Z1 Compact is priced at $525.
