Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini vs iPhone 5 vs HTC One Mini – Top Specs and Price Comparison

There are two categories of smartphone lovers: those who want big sizes phones so they can play all day on them and enjoy the experience of watching videos at the highest quality; and on the other hand, there are those phone lovers who want a device that feels comfortable in their hands, regardless the specs and features. But while some manufactures released mid-sized models with high end specs, other manufacturers made some “mini” versions of their successful giant smartphones. In this article we’re comparing the HTC One Mini with the Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5.

Displays and sizes

The HTC One Mini has the highest resolution – 1280x720pixels (341ppi) supported by its 4.3inches Super LCD screen, being followed by the iPhone 5, with a resolution of 1136x640pixels (326ppi) supported by the 4inches IPS LCD screen, and lastly, the S4 comes with a 4.3inches Super AMOLED display that supports 960x540pixels (256ppi).

In terms of sizes, on the first place we have the One Mini, which is 132mm tall, 63.2mm wide and 9.3mm thick and it weights 122grams. The S4 comes second, having a length of 124.6mm, a width of 8.9mm and a thickness of 8.9mm. It’s the lightest between the three phones, weighting 107grams. The iPhone 5 is measuring 123.8×58.6×7.6mm and it weights 112grams.

The HTC One Mini is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, the S4 is covered by Corning Gorilla Glass 2 and the iPhone 5 has oleophobic coating protection and Corning Gorilla Glass.

Hardware and OS

The S4 has an inferior display, but it wins in the category of hardware, having a 1.7GHz dual core Krait processor (Qualcomm MSM8930 Snapdragon 400 chipset and Adreno 305 GPU), which is much more powerful than HTC’s 1.4GHz dual core Krait 200 processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset + Adreno 305 GPU). The iPhone 5, which is older than both of its rivals, uses a 1.3GHz dual core Swift (ARM v7-based) processor (Apple A6 chipset + PowerVR SGX 543MP3 (triple-core graphics) GPU).

As for the built in storage, the iPhone 5 wins the category because it can be purchased with 16, 32 or 64GB of internal storage. The One Mini has an unexpandable internal memory of 16GB, while the S4 Mini has only 8GB but it’s expandable up to 64GB with a microSD card.

Both the HTC and Samsung models come loaded with Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) OS, which is upgradable to the 4.4.2 (KitKat) version. The HTC One has 1GB of RAM and uses the Sense 5 UI, while the S4 Mini has 1.5GB of RAM and uses TouchWiz. The iPhone 5 runs on Apple’s iOS 6, which is upgradable to the iOS 7.1.2, and soon it will receive the iOS 8 update.

Cameras

The S4 Mini and the iPhone 5 have 8MP rear cameras with mutual features such as LED flash, autofocus, geo tagging HDR, panorama and video recording at 1080p@30fps. The back camera on the One Mini is 4MP Ultrapixel, featuring also LED flash, geo tagging and autofocus, and having in addition features such as 1/3” sensor and 2µm pixel size.

The front camera on the S4 is 1.9MP, being followed by the HTC One Mini with a 1.6MP camera and the iPhone 5 has only a 1.2MP secondary camera.

Batteries

The Galaxy S4 Mini has a higher battery size – 1900mAh, being replaceable. The HTC One Mini features a non removable 1800mAh battery and the iPhone 5 has also a non removable battery, but with a much smaller capacity 0 1440mAh.

Prices

All three smartphones can be found on amazon.com – the HTC One Mini costs 334 dollars, the S4 Mini is priced at 297 dollars, and the iPhone 5 is still one of the most expensive smartphones. The 16GB variant costs 520 dollars.
