At Friday’s “Eggs and Issues” summit, one State Senator talked about more than budget issues.

State Senator Gary Nodler of Joplin, who is also a candidate for the 7th Congressional Seat in Missouri (among some 11 others at this point,) addressed the pending change in the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy currently being considered by the Congress and the President.

Responding to the fact that many of our allies, like Great Britain, allow homosexuals to serve openly, Nodler says, “The fact is, in Iraq, and for a period of time in Afghanistan, that happens to be the force that has the highest casualty rate.” Continuing, “I can’t say with any certainty that I have any proof that that’s because there’s less comfort from the Iraqis and Afghanis in dealing with those forces, but it might be.

“I believe the highest casualty rate in any of the allied forces has in fact been Great Britain,” Nodler concluded, implying some sort of correlation with casualties and the allowance of homosexuals to serve in the military openly.

Nodler recently told the Saint Louis Post-Dispatch that, essentially, he didn’t want to offend terrorists, saying changing the policy “would directly threaten the lives of soldiers today,” sparking a national controversy.

Nodler isn’t worried about the gays serving, but he is worried about the policy change. “The question isn’t gays serving in the military – the question is whether the U.S. should replace “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” with a policy openly declaring to the world that there are open gays and homosexuals actively serving in the military.”

Nodler said, “we have to win the hearts and minds of the people of Afghanistan and Iraq. The best source of information and intelligence is that provided by the people. If we make a public policy statement that is culturally offensive, one of the likely effects is the flow of information to protect our armed forces from terrorist acts would be impeaded.”
